Journalist: Hacking rife at Morgan's Mirror

LONDON -- Phone hacking was rife at U.K. tabloid the Daily Mirror under the editorship of Piers Morgan, a former employee testified Wednesday.James Hipwell, a former business journalist at the paper, told the Leveson Inquiry, which is investigating press ethics and practices in the U.K., that Morgan was an extremely hands-on editor, and it was "very unlikely he did not know what was going on."Hipwell conceded that he had no evidence that Morgan, who now hosts CNN talkshow "Piers Morgan Tonight," was involved in phone hacking, but said it was unlikely that Morgan had been kept in the dark."Nothing happened at the newspaper without him knowing," Hipwell said, speaking under oath a day after Morgan gave evidence to the inquiry via video-link from Los Angeles. Hipwell claimed that phone hacking was a "standard journalistic tool for gathering information" at the paper.Hipwell was convicted in 2005 of illegal share dealing, after it emerged that he had made money by buying shares that were promoted in the next day's paper. Morgan had also been investigated in same inquiry, but was cleared of wrong-doing.In a further development Wednesday, Heather Mills, the former wife of Paul McCartney, stated on her official website that she had never disclosed to Morgan voicemail messages left for her by her husband. Morgan told the inquiry Tuesday that he had listened to a message left on Mills' voice mail by McCartney, but refused to say how it had been obtained. Marion Dougherty, Legendary Casting Director, Dies at 88

Marion Dougherty, the legendary casting director who gave James Dean,Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Dustin HoffmanandGlenn Closetheir first shots in front of the camera, died Dec. 4 at her home in NY. She had been suffering from cardiovascular disease and was 88.Related Topics•Obituaries With her acute ability to spot great headliners, Dougherty flouted the old Hollywood system of stock casting by using actors with a nuanced sense of character and individuality. She first began working in live television, started her first casting office in NY City in 1965, and moved to Hollywood to head casting at Paramount in 1976. She joined Warner Bros. in 1979 and spent more than three decades there. "Marion was a pioneer," recalled Juliet Taylor, Wood Allen's frequent collaborator, who first worked for Dougherty as a secretary. "Before Marion, casting directors were more like organizers, secretaries who put together cattle calls. Marion turned it into a very selective process. She would say to directors, 'I will bring in three or four actors, they all will be very different, but they all could plqy the role.' She made a real contribution, and directors loved it." PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths Dougherty cast scores of films, including Midnight Cowboy (1969), The Owl and the Pussycat (1971), Slaughterhouse-Five (1972), The Paper Chase (1973), Escape From Alcatraz (1979), Urban Cowboy (1980), Reds (1981), The Killing Fields (1984), Full Metal Jacket (1987), Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Batman (1989), Falling Down (1993), Payback (1999) and the Lethal Weapon series. Today's casting directors who learned under her wing include Taylor,Amanda Mackey (Get Carter) and Ellen Lewis (Forest Gump). For eight years, Dougherty was the uncredited casting director on the acclaimed, live Kraft Television Theatre. She nextcast the gritty filmed dramasNaked City and Route 66. During those years, she started the careers of such actors as Dean and Hoffman. Talking about the actors she employed on Naked City, Dougherty once said: "This was Hollywood's window on the NY talent pool. There were people like [Robert] Duvall and [Walter] Matthau, and all these people - they had no idea who they were, and they saw them for the first time on Naked City." When Mayor John Lindsay made NY more attractive to filmmakers in the late '60s, productions poured into the city, and Dougherty, who had just opened her own casting office, was a beneficiary. "Directors poured in from all over the world, and because they didn't know the community, Marion would guide them," Taylor recalled.. "She had very strong, original opinions. For example, she championed Jon Voight for Midnight Cowboy when John Schlesinger wanted someone else. She was very supportive, made actors feel very comfortable, and did the same thing for directors." United Artists executive David Picker invited her to produce movies and she moved to the West Coast, working on such films as 1975's Smile and 1976's Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood. When Picker was subsequently named president of Paramount's motion picture division, she became the studio's vp in charge of casting before moving on, several years later, to Warners. Dougherty won a Crystal Award from Women in Film in 1986 and a year later received the Hoyt Bowers Award from the Casting Society of America. She is survived by two sisters and several nieces. Her friends plan to hold a private gathering in her memory at a date to be decided in January. PHOTO GALLERY: View Gallery Hollywood's Notable Deaths Related Topics Obituaries

'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Producer Bans New Yorker Critic From Future Screenings for Breaking Review Embargo

Baldur Bragason/Columbia TriStar Marketing Group, Inc. Producer Scott Rudin has banned NYer critic David Denby from screenings of his future movies because the NYer is breaking a Dec. 13 embargo on reviews of David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by publishing a review in its new issue, which hits newstands and the publication's iPad app on Monday.our editor recommendsTrent Reznor Releases Six Free Tracks From 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Soundtrack'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Designer Trish Summerville Plans a Mikael Blomkvist Menswear Line (Exclusive)FEINBERG FORECAST: 'War Horse,' 'Extremely Loud,' 'Dragon Tattoo,' 'Iron Lady' and 'Blood and Honey' Remain Question MarksNoomi Rapace vs. Rooney Mara: Will the Real Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Please Stand Up?Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace to Star in 'Dragon Tattoo' Director's Revenge Thriller'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo': New Poster Released (PHOTO)David Fincher: Scarlett Johansson Too Sexy for 'Girl With Dragon Tattoo' In an e-mail exchange with Denby, published at Indiewire.com, Rudin wrote, "You've very badly damaged the movie by doing this, and I could not in good conscience invite you to see another movie of mine again." PHOTOS: 10 Biggest Book-to-Big Screen Adaptations of the Last 25 Years Denby and fellow members of the NY Film Critics Circle saw the film early, on Nov. 28, because it was meeting to vote for the year's best films Nov. 29. (The critics' group actually postponed its meeting, originally set for Nov. 28, by a day in order to screen the movie before they deliberated.) The group chose the early voting date for the first time this year so that they would be the first major awards group to announce winners. Sony Pictures Entertainment executive vp motion pictures publicity Andre Caracoalso sent a stinging memo Sunday criticizing Denby(see entire e-mail below) to critics in an attempt to maintain the embargo. "As a matter of principle, the NYer's breach violates a trust and undermines a system designed to help journalists do their job and serve their readers," Caraco wrote. "We have been speaking directly with the NYer about this matter and expect to take measures to ensure this kind of violation does not occur again." Denby's move also drew criticism from other members of the NYFCC, particularly since Denby had lobbied against the group's taking an early vote, which, ironically, led to the early screening of Fincher's movie. "Sony was very explicit about us not running anything early," NYFCC president John Anderson toldThe Hollywood Reporter. "The screening was specifically for our consideration as NYFCC voters, and unless David had a different conversation than I, he agreed to the same thing the rest of us did. There may be mitigating factors, but I don't know for a fact that there were, and don't now what they might have been. We abide by embargoes all the time." VIDEO: 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Extended Trailer Released "The NYFCC has been excoriated in some quarters," said Anderson, "for supposedly wanting to be 'first' this year (writers have consistently ignored the other reasons I've provided). But it's precisely a desperation to be first that is complicating the relationship between movie studios and critics, journalists and the rest of the legitimate media. Having what you might call a gentleman's agreement about when we write our reviews is hardly a moral compromise. And I can understand a company wanting some control over its product. Frankly, we have no right to see movies early; we get to do so as a courtesy. And perhaps the whole process should be abolished -- if everyone had to go to the theater to see everything, it would level the playing field, and no one would have to 'play ball' in order to maintain their access." Denby's review, which is largely positive, begins, "You can't take your eyes off Rooney Mara as the notorious Lisbeth Salandar, in the American movie version of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." And it concludes, "This is a bleak but mesmerizing piece of filmmaking; it offers a glancing, chilled view of a world in which brief moments of loyalty flicker between repeated acts of denial." In his email exchange with Rudin, Denby explained the decision to break the embargo on the movie, which opens Dec. 21, by saying there were two many important films opening at the end of the year for the NYer to accomodate them all. It would have had to run them as either short reviews or wait until January to deal with them at more length. "It was not my intention to break the embargo, and I never would have done it with a negative review. But since I liked the movie, we came reluctantly to the decision to go with early publication," the critic wrote. "I apologize for the breach of the embargo. It won't happen again. But this was a special case brought on by year-end madness." VIDEOS: 'Dragon Tattoo's' Christopher Plummer in THR's Awards Season Actors Roundtable Rudin responded that Denby's explanations were "disingenuous" and "nonsense." He added, "You will now cause ALL of the other reviews to run a month before the release of the movie, and that is a deeply destructive thing to have done." Within the NYFCC, Denby has been accused of being inconsistent for racing to publish the first Tattoo review. He was among the loudest voices urging his fellow critics not to vote on winners early. "What's so important about being first?" he demanded in the following "huffy" e-mail Oct. 25: Dear NYFCC Member: We apologize for the huffy tone of what follows (and trust us, we feel duly guilty that we didn't attend the business meeting), but this is too important for us to ignore. We're unhappy with the Circle's decision to vote on November 28. We think it's potentially a major mistake, and are unlikely to vote at all if November 28 remains the date. There are multiple reasons for this dissent. First of all, it's extremely unlikely that all the major Christmas movies will be shown before the meeting. We realize that the whole premise of this super-early voting date is that since the studios show their films to the National Board of Review, they'll agree to show them to us as well. But the members of the NBR aren't working critics. From the studios' point of view, there's a lot less politics involved in showing the movies early to them. Most of the December movies may be done now, but that doesn't mean that marketing divisions and producers and directors (who make these decisions, not publicists) will allow us to see them early. And here's the crux of the issue. Let's say that the overwhelming majority of the studios do decide to show their films in time for us. Let's imagine that there's only one holdout - say, the studio releasing "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Is the NY Film Critics Circle really going to vote for Best Picture of the Year without seeing the new David Fincher film? (Please don't squawk if you don't happen to like Fincher, or Swedish-set art thrillers; it's just an example.) Voting without the opportunity to see that one film - or any other movie you might name - would be a serious breach of the Circle's integrity. It would violate the idea that we work from a level playing field. Don't forget, as well, that the meeting, as scheduled, comes right after the Thanksgiving holiday (a shortened week when, traditionally, almost nothing gets screened), and that there are lots of movies opening in late November that we all have to deal with. The jam-up would be unworkable. Are we really going to be able to see, and absorb, the 25 to 30 awards-season movies opening in December by the end of the third week in November? Is Steven Spielberg really going to let us see "The War Horse," which is opening on Christmas day, five weeks before opening? It seems seriously doubtful. Even if all the major releases are shown to us, smaller, less heralded films drop into circulation in early and mid December, and we would need to consider those as well for possible awards. It would be a travesty of our history, which is rich with independent and idiosyncratic votes, if we allowed those movies to fall out of consideration. An additional point: Even if we're able to see everything in November, many of us, who like to work from fresh impressions, would need to see those movies again later in order to review them. Major inconvenience. But what we're really wondering is this: Why is it so important to be first? Why is it important at all? Who cares when the National Board of Review announces its choices? They aren't critics, and by trumping them, we're taking them more seriously than they should be taken. And putting it crassly, how does being first benefit us as a group? Our names are not listed in the news articles or the blurbs that run with the ads announcing awards. If we rush into the awards-season madness, aren't we simply reinforcing its destructive effect on release schedules, in which half the interesting movies of the year are held for the final weeks? Aren't we putting ourselves on the same level as the publicists and the Harvey Weinsteins who are trying to game the awards, joining the very thing that we normally deplore? If all the movies, by some miracle, are shown before November 28, and we can see them, then we will vote. But otherwise, we'll take a pass this year and vote again when the group comes to its senses. Here is Sony's Dec. 4 Dragon Tattoo e-mail: Dear Colleague, All who attended screenings of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo agreed in writing to withhold reviews until closer to the date of the film's worldwide release date. Regrettably, one of your colleagues, David Denby of The NYer, has decided to break his agreement and will run his review on Monday, December 5th. This embargo violation is completely unacceptable. By allowing critics to see films early, at different times, embargo dates level the playing field and enable reviews to run within the films' primary release window, when audiences are most interested. As a matter of principle, the NYer's breach violates a trust and undermines a system designed to help journalists do their job and serve their readers. We have been speaking directly with The NYer about this matter and expect to take measures to ensure this kind of violation does not occur again. In the meantime, we have every intention of maintaining the embargo in place and we want to remind you that reviews may not be published prior to December 13th. We urge all who have been given the opportunity to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to honor the commitments agreed to as a condition of having early access to the film. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. National basketball association may lock out nets revs

Lebron and Kobe Bryant fought it on ABC's traditional Christmas Day 2010 broadcast. With little movement in discussions between National basketball association proprietors and gamers, television tv stations and marketers are irritatingly waiting around the sidelines for which presently appears inevitable: the probability of the professional basketball season losing games from the regular-season schedule -- or worse. When the National basketball association does not play some of its 2011-2012 sked (which runs from November into June), national service providers ABC/ESPN and TNT will forfeit around $1.25 billion in ad sales revenue, based on one estimate. Include regional sports nets, most of which will struggle even harder compared to national nets to locate substitute product for that high-profile National basketball association, and there's without doubt a great deal is on the line.Still, because so many sports fans don't take serious notice from the National basketball association until winter (ABC's first game is typically on Christmas Day), a shortish work stoppage such as the one out of 1998 (which trimmed the growing season from 82 games to 50) would not be everything devastating."The National basketball association is essential sports programming and when there's no season or maybe the growing season is limited, their sales revenue is going to be influenced," former CBS Sports mind Neal Pilson states. "A few of the money could be re-expressed through the systems in other sports or programming where there's an identical demographic, but it'll have an effect.InchThinking about the NBA's rankings for marquee matchups and postseason contests recently, systems is going to be missing out on the strong artist. For instance, all the league's TV partners demonstrated nice rankings gains last season, and May's compelling playoff action lifted TNT towards the No. 1 place for that month among all fundamental cable nets in each and every key rankings category."The figures the National basketball association hits among 18-35 males, as well as 18-54 males, it's a pretty searched for-after demographic and (tv stations) are certainly baffled there," states SNL Kagan analyst Adam Swanson.Still, the quantity of damage that canceled games may have around the systems will differ greatly based on their inventory of other programming options. For instance, throughout the final National basketball association work stoppage in 1998-99, TNT could fill its National basketball association timeslots with films along with other creation that really outperformed their expected National basketball association rankings. Although this may not be now, TNT's complementary selection of entertainment fare can help. "A primary reason they (TNT) possess the National basketball association is since it is a demographic that's compatible to numerous their male-oriented programming," Pilson states. Consequently, they might have the ability to cover some advertising deficits with implies that attract exactly the same demographic the National basketball association draws, such as the more male-skewing of their dramas, "Southland" and "Leverage."ESPN also offers an in-depth roster of sporting options and sports paperwork to pay for any lost arranging. However for RSNs that depend on one sport for various occasions of the year -- for example baseball in spring and basketball during the cold months -- matters could be more difficult."For that regionals, the impact is significant," Pilson states. "ESPN can move advertising to school basketball and Turner can move a few of the money to entertainment qualities, however for RSNs that do not have hockey, on their behalf, this is serious."Although not everyone thinks RSNs will require this type of huge hit. Harvey Schiller, who formerly offered as leader of Turner Sports and Boss of YankeesNet, highlights that RSNs take advantage of audiences that typically are curious about not just basketball but additionally whatever other anchor sports the funnel provides. Consequently, customer bases shouldn't seriously fall off. Simultaneously, with no overhead of televising games, RSNs is going to be cutting an enormous cost."(RSNs) are still getting their customer costs, that are truly the life blood (of the revenue)," Schiller states. "The advertising revenue is usually comparable to the price of production, so without creating anything, their operating costs go lower significantly."If, actually, systems is going to be OK for the short term or mid-term, the question becomes whether you will see significant damage for any extended stay in play. In April, Mike Ozanian, co-host from the YES Network's Forbes SportsMoney, believed the National basketball association could expect a minimum of a 30% increase on its national TV privileges costs when contracts are positioned for renegotiation in 2016. When it comes to marketers, Chris Russo, who's Boss of independent online sports property Large Lead Sports, states you will see creative choices for dollars formerly reserved for that National basketball association. Included in this are marketing possibilities with National basketball association personas plus some migration to digital shops with sports that achieve exactly the same demos because the National basketball association. But neither Russo nor other experts believe marketers will remain away lengthy once the National basketball association eventually returns towards the hard court. "You can observe what went down using the National football league lately," Swanson states. "In the beginning some marketers were performing hardball plus they were saying, 'We're not extending its love to conduct business once they return.' Installed up a front, however when it came lower into it, once the ball got moving on football, then all of the marketers signed plus they were prepared to pay rates. Basketball is not as large as football, but it's been doing much better than baseball in certain respects. If you wish to pursue that market, it's kind of a smart choice: Marketers is going to be back." Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope

A Thomas Tull and Warrior Poets presentation. (International sales: CAA, Los Angeles.) Produced by Jeremy Chilnick, Matthew Galkin, Harry Knowles, Thomas Tull. Executive producers, Gil Champion, Harry Knowles, Stan Lee, Jack Selby, Benjamin Statler, Joss Whedon. Directed by Morgan Spurlock. Written by Spurlock, Jeremy Chilnick. With: Holly Conrad, James Darling, Guillermo del Toro, Seth Green, Se Young Kang, Harry Knowles, Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Eli Roth, Chuck Rozanski, Joss Whedon.Somewhere in Iowa, there lives a lonely geek deeply ashamed of his love for comicbooks, action figures and/or "Star Trek" re-runs. Morgan Spurlock's "Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope" is designed to convince that poor misfit he's not alone -- that for four days every July, there exists a place where he belongs. Keeping himself off-camera while putting exec producers Joss Whedon, Stan Lee and Harry Knowles front-and-center alongside half a dozen extreme fans, Spurlock brings his usual good-humored approach to the subject, nicely balancing absurdity with genuine human interest. VOD and direct-sales seem the surest way to reach the Con-verted. Before Spurlock, many have tried and failed to make a film that definitively captures the Hajj-to-Mecca-like experience of the 125,000-plus pop-culture aficionados who crowd the San Diego Convention Center each year for Comic-Con. Some come to meet their idols, others hope to be discovered, but most simply thrive in an environment where they can celebrate their favorite fictional characters. Remember, "fan" is short "fanatic"; these are not low-key personalities. The logistical challenges alone make telling their collective story an undertaking even more complex than shooting a 3D Miley Cyrus concert movie, and one that required as many as 26 cameras rolling at any given time. To simplify things, Spurlock solicited potential subjects online and chose six whose personal narratives represented the range of experience the event delivers: a collector obsessed with buying a limited-edition toy, two aspiring illustrators, an amateur costume designer, a veteran comicbook dealer and a young man who met his soul-mate at Comic-Con one year earlier (their co-dependent relationship gives new meaning to the word "cling-on"). In what could prove to be the "Canterbury Tales" of our generation, had Chaucer enlisted the cathedral's most evangelical priests to underwrite a Catholic recruitment video, "Comic-Con" offers insight into the dreams and desperations of these six pilgrims. Will Chuck Rozanski, owner of Mile High Comics, find a buyer for the Holy Grail of Marvel comics, a near-mint copy of Red Raven No. 1? Can Holly Conrad and her team of Mass Effect fans overcome wardrobe malfunctions to win the masquerade ball? How many Storm Troopers can you squeeze into one photo op? All these questions and more will be answered in what feels like an extended sizzle reel for the event (which bears little resemblance to the nerdy swap meet that began in 1970). By the end of Day Two, with another half-hour to go, the excitement is already beginning to wear thin. Working with editors Tim K. Smith and Tova Goodman for nearly a year, Spurlock can't quite decide how to organize all that footage, projected at a low enough resolution he must have intended the project for home viewing , where it's easy enough to bundle the film with hours of bonus material. In addition to making this doc, Spurlock also published a coffee-table book featuring photos (in full costumed regalia) of "cosplay" groupies and their idols snapped against a plain white backdrop. Video interviews from these same sessions make their way into the film, which strains between cramming in as many famous faces as possible and finding anything meaningful to say. Spurlock is too busy hyping the film/TV/comicbook/vidgame industries' single biggest hype platform to get philosophical, though psychologists could have a field day with these characters (like Eric, whose parents met at a Star Trek convention). For the casual film or TV admirer, the result has a vaguely unsettling feel that calls to mind the "Gooble gobble! One of us!" scene in Tod Browning's "Freaks." This isn't a vicarious tour of Comic-Con so much as an indoctrination.Camera (color, HDCAM), Daniel Marracino; editors, Tim K.
